Alhambra High School’s recent staging of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street proved to be an impressive theatrical triumph, marked by its artistic ambition, intricate visuals, and powerful performances. Directed by theater teacher Rachel Snow, this daring production tackled the challenging complexities of Stephen Sondheim’s iconic score and haunting storyline.

From the moment the curtain rose, audiences were transported to grimy 19th-century London, complete with shadowy alleyways and a chilling barbershop. The work of the scenic and lighting teams added depth and drama to each scene, reinforcing the show’s dark and brooding tone.

Among the many excellent performances was junior Mia Reyes-Salguero, whose standout portrayal of Mrs. Lovett was both chillingly comedic and heartbreakingly poignant. Reyes-Salguero delivered Sondheim’s notoriously difficult lyrics with clarity and emotional depth, capturing Lovett’s dark humor and tragic longing. Based on the strength of her performance, Mia was asked to sing the National Anthem at a local event the following month. Her chemistry with Nshawn De La Torre as the tormented Sweeney Todd elevated every scene they shared, particularly in the crowd-favorite number “A Little Priest.” The rest of the company also excelled in their roles and together, made this year’s spring production one of their most successful ones yet.

In the program director’s note, Snow wrote of the emotional and philosophical depths of Sweeney Todd, and the rewards of bringing such a challenging work to life.
