Allison Mayrena is new to business ownership, but that hasn’t stopped her from becoming a leader in the community. She’s the President of the Downtown Alhambra Business Association (DABA) and owner of Vita Cane Alhambra, bringing a fresh perspective from her former career in education.
In 2022, Mayrena transitioned from a 15-year career in education to entrepreneurship. The opportunity came when her family member, Kenny Voong, along with his business partner Vinny Diep, offered her the chance to take over their Vita Cane location in Alhambra.
“When he offered to sell me the location, I said yes with no hesitation,” Mayrena recalls. “I knew that any location he chose would be successful.” Voong and Diep are now her mentors, along with DABA’s Executive Director Joanna Vargas, in navigating the ins and outs of business ownership.
Shortly after taking over the shop, she got involved in DABA at the recommendation of a friend who said it would be a good idea to meet other local business owners. Her enthusiasm and leadership were quickly recognized, and she was nominated for the role of President.
As DABA President, Mayrena works closely with Joanna Vargas to bring together local business owners, drive economic growth, and beautify the downtown district. She leads DABA’s monthly meetings and spearheads events like the Main Street Market, the St. Paddy’s Day Pub Crawl, and an upcoming Cinco de Mayo celebration. DABA also takes up the task of beautifying downtown, including painting utility boxes and maintaining streetlights and wayfinder signs to ensure the area remains welcoming and vibrant.
What makes a good leader? I believe having a caring heart is a great place to start. I’ve come to deeply care not only for my own business but for our Alhambra community as a whole, as well as the staff that I hire and train.
Her advice for young women: Believe in yourselves. Through hard work and dedication, anything is possible. Even though starting a business or changing a career is no easy task, don’t shy away from any opportunities to learn. Also, seek help and support from your community.
