Summer Time and the Livin’ is Easy

    Fountain at Almansor Park

School is out and everyone, young and old, is looking for things to do. In Alhambra there are plenty of opportunities for good food (try our varied and delicious restaurants this summer). To keep active there are recreation and learning offerings for people of all ages. For starters, take a look at the City of Alhambra Leisure Guide, mailed to every residence in town and available online.

There you will find organized activities for most every interest. For kids and adults there is open-play basketball, table tennis, badminton, Tai-Chi and volleyball at Almansor and Granada Parks (check the Leisure Guide for time and place). There is swimming for all ages at Granada and Alhambra Park and children’s playgrounds at all of our parks. Little League baseball has been played in Alhambra for generations of young athletes.

There are a wide variety of class offerings, too. Academic and computer classes are available for children and adults. Other classes include aquatics, arts and crafts, health and fitness, dance, music and performing arts, yoga, sports and martial arts, including golf, soccer and tennis.

There are numerous activities offered for seniors at the Joslyn Adult Recreation Center at Story Park, including special interest clubs and events, Case Management services, health screenings, nutritional programs, and senior outings.

For people of all ages, the Parks and Recreation Department also offers summer movies and concerts at Alhambra Park.

There are other summer programs available as well. The YMCA of West San Gabriel Valley offers summer programs for kids and adults. There are fitness programs, a swimming pool, and a fully equipped gym for workouts. For kids, there are after school activities and Summer Day camp.

The Boys & Girls Club of West San Gabriel Valley & Eastside, located in Monterey Park, also offers programs for young people over the summer.

For music lovers, beyond the summer concerts in the park are events held by the Alhambra Performing Arts Center which offers musical performances at the Sage Granada Park United Methodist Church. The APAC is the creation of Alhambra’s Renaissance man Chef Bill Yee.

Is dancing your thing? The Granada LA offers all styles of Latin American dancing and lessons. The Lai Lai Ballroom and Studio offers ballroom dancing and lessons as well as Performing Arts and studio rentals. The Arte Flamenco Dance Theatre features performances and classes in flamenco and other dance styles. Alhambra’s Parks and Recreation Department also provides dancing classes for Seniors. Classes offered include belly dance, ballet and tap, flamenco and others.

Food distribution is also available. School-aged children can enjoy free lunches and snacks at Alhambra, Almansor and Granada Parks. Seniors can receive meals at Story Park, and the YMCA also has a food distribution program. Contact the parks and the Y for details.

We hope you have a fulfilling summer this year. Alhambra can help.
