ALHAMBRA, Calif. — On Saturday, October 18 at 10:00 a.m., Fremont Elementary School will host a community mural painting event led by professional artists from Studio Tutto, where students, families, and local residents will work side-by-side to create a vibrant, multicultural mural celebrating Fremont’s rich diversity.
The mural — featuring flowers from regions around the world that represent the school’s student body — is part of a long-term campus beautification initiative launched by the Fremont PTA. In 2024, PTA leadership presented the idea of enhancing the school environment through art and nature, making the mural one of its primary fundraising goals.
To ensure the project reflected community priorities, the PTA conducted a family survey asking parents what campus improvements mattered most. The results showed strong support for efforts focused on beautification and cultural representation, confirming the mural as a meaningful first step in a larger plan to make Fremont a more welcoming and inspiring place for students.
“This mural is a reflection of who we are at Fremont — a vibrant, multicultural community where every student’s roots are celebrated,” said Dr. Chavez, Principal of Fremont Elementary. “It’s incredible to see how family voices helped shape this design and how everyone is coming together to make it a reality.”
Families also shared their cultural heritage and suggested plants and flowers meaningful to their backgrounds. Those ideas directly inspired many of the mural’s featured elements — from Mexico’s prickly pear cactus and red dahlia, to Vietnam’s lotus flower, China’s ginkgo tree, Taiwan’s cherry blossoms, and the white sage honoring Indigenous Tongva traditions. “The mural is more than just a painting — it’s a story of our community,” said Rosalyn Escobar, PTA President. “This project began with a dream shared by families and grew through their dedication and support. Seeing everyone’s cultural
stories reflected on our walls is something truly special.”
The event will include hour-long painting sessions throughout the day, with groups of about 20 students, families, and community members taking turns adding their brushstrokes to the mural. A storytelling table will invite families to share stories about their cultural traditions and the meaning behind the flowers and symbols in the artwork. In partnership with Asian Pacific Islander Forward Movement (APIFM), families will also take part in garden activities using seeds and soil from some of the mural’s featured plants — encouraging families to grow their own gardens at home and strengthen their connection to
nature.
Funding for the mural was made possible through the fundraising efforts of the Fremont PTA and the families who supported school fundraising events. The mural represents Phase One of Fremont’s campus beautification initiative. Phase Two, planned for a later date, will focus on expanding the school’s greenery with more native plants and shade trees to create a sustainable, welcoming environment for students. A formal mural unveiling celebration will take place later this month.
