Alhambra High School Alum Ke Huy Quan was recently selected to star in Disney’s animated movie Zootopia 2 opening at the Regal Edwards Alhambra Theater on November 26th. This long-awaited sequel (ten years in the making) features Quan as the voice of Gary De’Snake, a misunderstood Pit Viper.
It has been a long road for Quan to become a Hollywood mainstay. His acting career took off around 40 years ago, when he was cast as a child actor in the 1985 movie The Goonies, where he played the character Data and in 1984’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, playing Harrison Ford’s young partner, Short Round.
Shortly after this time, acting roles for Asian actors dried up. Quan made a pivotal move that kept him in the business, going behind the camera in various roles, including as a fight scene coordinator and an Assistant Director. The 2018 release and massive success of Crazy Rich Asians alerted Quan that it was time to step in front of the camera once more. He was soon cast in the 2022 release Everything Everywhere All at Once. He played the part of Waymond Wang so well that he won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in 2023. There followed an invitation to the White House to meet President Biden. His success now continues and expands to the animated scene, where he brings his talent and heart to a whole new generation of moviegoers.
