As summer takes over Alhambra, many of us are enjoying longer days and warmer weather. While we soak up the season, it’s easy to overlook something that makes all of this possible: a reliable water supply. At the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, our mission is to ensure that water continues to flow to the communities we serve, including Alhambra, not just during the summer, but year round and for generations to come.
One of the biggest efforts underway to protect our region’s water future is the Delta Conveyance Project, a critical upgrade to the state’s water delivery system. Much of the water used in Southern California, including in the San Gabriel Valley, comes from the State Water Project, which transports water from Northern California through the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. But the existing system is aging and vulnerable. Earthquakes, sea level rise, and environmental challenges threaten the reliability of this water source. The Delta Conveyance Project proposes building a modern tunnel to move water more safely and efficiently through the Delta, protecting it from disruptions and ensuring it can continue reaching communities like ours.
This project is especially important for the San Gabriel Valley because our District relies entirely on imported water from the State Water Project to supplement local groundwater. In dry years or times of drought, this imported supply becomes even more critical. Without it, communities like Alhambra could face serious water shortages. That’s why the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District strongly supports the Delta Conveyance Project. It’s not just a piece of infrastructure, it’s a safeguard for our way of life.
At the same time, we continue to invest locally in conservation programs and public education. From rebates for water efficient appliances to resources for drought tolerant landscaping, we’re helping residents use water wisely and sustainably. So as you water your garden, fill up your reusable water bottle, or cool off under the summer sun, know that there’s a much larger system at work behind the scenes and we’re here to protect it.
The San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District proudly serves the cities of Alhambra, Monterey Park, Azusa, and Sierra Madre. This summer and beyond, we remain committed to securing a dependable water future for all.
