Multisport Athletes
With the popularity of youth travel teams that operate year-round, the multisport athlete in high school is a rarity. However, two athletes from AUSD are standouts participating in not one, not two but three or four Varsity sports.
Nero Navarro, a junior at Alhambra HS, is primarily a baseball and football player, but added track and field to his resume last year and wrestling this year. Nero made All League Honorable Mention in baseball as a freshman and is on track to make First Team this season. He is a Receiver and Defensive Back in football leading the Moors in receptions last season. He participated in track and field for the first time last season and is one of the top medal winners this season. He tried wrestling this year and placed third in the League Finals. Who knows what sport he may add next year.
Chris Contreras is a senior at Mark Keppel HS and primarily a basketball player. He was Defensive Player of the Year for the Almont League as a junior and League Co-MVP this past season. Chris played in the San Gabriel Valley Boys All Star Basketball Game this past season. He also played baseball as a junior and is currently an outfielder on this year’s team, batting over .400 so far. He played football in the fall of 2024 and was the Aztecs’ leading receiver.
Basketball Recap
This past season was one of the most successful seasons in a long time as four Varsity teams played well into the CIF-SS playoffs and three of them made it to the State Tournaments. The Keppel Girls, led by Almont League and CIF-SS Division 3AA Coach of the Year Kenny Phan, won the CIF-SS Division 3AA Championship. They also made it to the second round of the State Basketball Division II Tournament. Keira Kamida was named Almont League MVP as well as All CIF-SS Division 3AA Player of the Year, while Alyssa Canizal was the Almont League Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All CIF-SS Division 3AA.
The Alhambra Boys, under Coach Bryan Gonzalez, had a season to remember as Landon Winslow led the team in scoring and rebounds. Landon was named All League and All CIF and participated in the San Gabriel Valley Boys Basketball Game. The Moors made it to the semifinals of the CIF-SS Division 4A Tournament and advanced to the Regional semifinals of the State Division V Tournament.
The Keppel Boys won the Almont League under Coach Hung Duong and made a semifinal appearance in the CIF-SS Division 3A Tournament as well as the first round of the Division III State Tournament. The Aztecs were led all year by Almont League Co-MVP’s Maddux Hang and Chris Contreras. Hang, only a sophomore, was also named First Team All-CIF as well as a CIF-SS Scholar Athlete. Contreras was also named to the Division 3A Second Team by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association.
The San Gabriel Boys also had one of their best seasons, making it to the quarterfinals of the CIF-SS Division 5AA Tournament. Diego Olvera led the Matadors all season and was named Almont League First Team.
