Families from across the Alhambra Unified School District gathered at Mark Keppel High School on Saturday, March 22 to celebrate many of the vibrant cultures that make up our diverse community. Hosted by the Alhambra Latino Association (ALA), the annual Celebrating Our Cultures event lived up to its name with an afternoon of dynamic performances, meaningful student presentations, and enthusiastic community support.
The event featured an exciting lineup of student talent from across the district. All three high school’s drama departments showcased their spring musicals, with Mark Keppel kicking off the showcase with a performance Avenue Q. San Gabriel High School wowed the crowd with excerpts from both Beetlejuice, while Alhambra High School scared and delighted the audience with a musical number of Sweeney Todd. From Fremont Elementary, Ballet Folklórico Club Los Abuelitos delighted attendees with traditional dance, as did Alhambra High School’s Ballet Folklórico and the professional group Ballet Folklórico Sol de Fuego.
Musical performances added even more energy and emotion to the celebration. Park Elementary student Annette Ruvalcaba delivered a heartfelt solo, and Sabrina Ge of Mark Keppel’s Tri-M Music Honor Society impressed the audience with her vocal talent.
In the foyer, an impressive collection of student-created artwork impressed art lovers, with some community members even inquiring about purchasing some pieces. Outside, several informational booths were set up as groups shared information and answered questions of community members who stopped by.
ALA was widely praised for organizing a meaningful and engaging event that highlighted the talents of local students while fostering cultural appreciation. “This is exactly what community looks like,” one attendee remarked. “It was inspiring to see so many families, educators, and students come together to support and celebrate one another.”
With a suggested $2 donation at the door, the event also helped raise funds for ALA’s ongoing efforts to support student scholarships and cultural programming. Organizers expressed their gratitude for the strong turnout and community spirit that made the event a success.
