Student Voices Make Strong Impression on AUSD Leaders

Hearing directly from these brave student panelists led to difficult, but necessary, conversations.

Recently, a group of brave students participated in a Student Voice panel discussion during a general principals meeting, sharing their personal experiences with discrimination. Moderated by Joshua Ferriere and Gabby Wong, panelists Briana Hampton, Victor Lam, and Keiko Rakin  spoke candidly about the challenges they experienced during their elementary and high school years. Their stories of racial and cultural discrimination, as well as struggles with LGBTQ+ acceptance, resonated deeply with the school leaders present.

The panel was organized by Dr. Lily Jarvis, Director of Educational Equity and Accountability, who emphasized the importance of giving students a platform to share their experiences. “This panel was a powerful reminder of the need to listen directly to our students,” Dr. Jarvis said. “Their courage and honesty will help us create a more supportive environment where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.”

The principals were visibly moved by the students’ stories and reflected on the need to build understanding and acceptance, and to improve their overall school climates. Many pledged to implement better support systems, including an emphasis on cultural sensitivity for staff and creating safer spaces for students to voice concerns. The panel underscored the importance of fostering inclusive school cultures where all students can thrive and feel safe.

This panel discussion is part of AUSD’s ongoing efforts toward ensuring that students’ voices play an active role in shaping educational policies and environments, ultimately creating a more welcoming and supportive district for everyone.

High school students shared their personal experiences that helped principals reflect on ways to make their campuses more welcoming and supportive. (From left to right: Joshua Ferreire, Gabby Wong, Briana Hampton, Victor Lam, and Keiko Rakin)
