AUSD Student Leaders Receive Awards for Traffic Safety Advocacy

Student Board Member Keiko Rakin and Student Advisory Council Member Kevin Tang (center) were honored by Impact Teen Drivers for their outstanding leadership in promoting roadway safety. They were joined by ITD Executive Director Dr. Kelly Browning and Deputy Director Carol Greene, along with their proud mothers, during the April 8th Board of Education meeting.

At its April 8 Board of Education meeting, Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD) recognized its ongoing partnership with Impact Teen Drivers (ITD), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing reckless and distracted driving among teens. The recognition coincided with the 2025 Be the Change Fellowship Summit, hosted by ITD earlier that day. ITD Executive Director Dr. Kelly Browning and Deputy Director Carol Green attended the meeting to accept the recognition…and then offered a special acknowledgment of their own.

Student Board Member Keiko Rakin and Student Advisory Council Member Kevin Tang were honored for their leadership in youth advocacy and roadway safety. After participating in last year’s Be the Change Fellowship Summit, both students used their voices to raise awareness around safe driving practices. Their efforts earned them the opportunity to represent California as featured panelists at the National Lifesavers Conference, the country’s largest event focusing on  traffic safety. Their session was filmed for national distribution to demonstrate the power of student advocacy. In recognition of their contributions, ITD presented Keiko and Kevin with $350 Create Real Impact Awards. Both of their mothers (who had prior knowledge of the surprise) and fellow Student Advisory Council members were in attendance to help celebrate the moment. AUSD is proud of its continued collaboration with Impact Teen Drivers and remains grateful for the organization’s efforts to uplift student leaders and empower them to make a positive impact in their communities.

Following their recognition from Impact Teen Drivers, Keiko Rakin and Kevin Tang posed with the Board of Education and fellow members of the Student Advisory Council. The celebration highlighted their commitment to advocacy and youth leadership throughout the district.
