In a surprise announcement at a district principals meeting, Dr. Denise Jaramillo, Superintendent of the Alhambra Unified School District (AUSD), was named the 2024 Los Angeles County Superintendent of the Year. The award was presented by Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) Superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo and recognizes Dr. Jaramillo’s exceptional dedication to equity, inclusion, and student engagement.

“Dr. Jaramillo is a true visionary who has transformed AUSD into a thriving district,” said Dr. Duardo. “She brings a blend of expertise, empathy, and forward-thinking solutions to every challenge she faces. Her commitment to ensuring that all students and staff feel valued and heard is truly inspiring.”

Dr. Jaramillo’s career spans nearly four decades in AUSD. A Mark Keppel High School alumna, she returned to the district as a teacher and rose through various leadership roles to become superintendent. Known for her compassionate approach and unwavering belief in every student’s potential, she has guided AUSD through transformative and challenging times with a steadfast focus on academic excellence and student well-being.

“This award is a long time coming, and so incredibly well deserved,” shares Robert Gin, who was Board President at the time of the recognition. “I say this often, but I think we are the best school district in the State of California. It’s because of so many people, but especially because of the leadership at the top. Dr. Jaramillo is an amazing superintendent and AUSD is lucky to have her. Obviously, she is smart and forward-thinking, but she also leads the district with kindness and heart, and never loses sight of the students and families she serves.”

Under Dr. Jaramillo’s leadership, AUSD has made significant strides in fostering equity and inclusion. She championed the establishment of a student board member position and created an elected Student Advisory Council representing all three high schools. These initiatives amplify student voices, allowing them to provide feedback on policies and share concerns directly with district leaders.

It was Janet Lees, Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, who nominated Dr. Jaramillo for the award. “Dr. Jaramillo’s ability to handle difficult situations with kindness, understanding and grace has earned her the respect and trust of everyone she interacts with. She  is one of the most humble superintendents I know, who truly leads with kindness, humility, and compassion, and does not give herself any credit for her amazing ability to lead.”

Dr. Jaramillo was initially speechless after the surprise, but afterward, expressed her gratitude to the collective contributions of others in the district. “I am deeply honored and humbled by this recognition. But it is truly a reflection of the hard work and dedication of so many people in the AUSD community,” reflected Dr. Jaramillo. “Every day, I am blessed to work with an amazing team that focuses on what is best for students, families, and employees. With their collaboration, innovation, and commitment to equity in education, AUSD is working together to create a positive and inclusive learning environment for each and every student.”

LACOE superintendent Dr. Debra Duardo congratulates Dr. Jaramillo for this prestigious accomplishment.

Dr. Jaramillo’s granddaughter Madison and daughter Aftin were among those who surprised her at the announcement.

Unfortunately, Dr. Jaramillo was not able to attend a recognition ceremony held on November 8th, but her colleagues made sure her presence was still felt during the festivities.
