Alhambra Unified School District is looking ahead at a changing educational landscape and inviting families, staff, students, and community members to help shape what comes next. Like other school districts across the region, state, and many communities throughout the country, AUSD has experienced a steady decline in student enrollment over the past few decades.
Declining enrollment can have significant implications for school districts, affecting finances, staffing, programs, facilities, and school operations. Changes to enrollment can be challenging, but they also provide an opportunity to thoughtfully consider the future of the district and how it can continue providing strong educational experiences for students.
In February 2026, AUSD formed its Enrollment Impact Committee (EIC) to study the issue. Over the past several months, the committee has examined enrollment trends, demographic data, and factors affecting student enrollment. It also has compared AUSD’s experience with neighboring school districts in the San Gabriel Valley, throughout Los Angeles County, and across California.
The data can help the district understand where enrollment has been and where it may be headed, but district leaders recognize that numbers tell only part of the story. Understanding what students, families, staff, and the broader community value most is an equally important part of planning for the future.
That is why AUSD is now inviting the community to become part of the conversation. In the coming weeks, the district will host Community Conversations at each of its 13 elementary schools. These sessions will provide opportunities for community members to learn more about the EIC’s work, ask questions, share ideas, and discuss what they value most about AUSD. The district encourages all community partners to take an active role in reimagining AUSD and considering what the future of the district can look like. By bringing together the perspectives of students, families, staff, and community members, AUSD hopes to build a shared vision for the next chapter of the district.
