Clippers Alum Craig Smith Brings Books, Basketball, and Inspiration to Ynez Students

Ynez students celebrated a memorable day of reading and inspiration during a special visit from former LA Clippers power guard Craig Smith, who visited Ynez School on March 25 as part of the Clippers’ Read to Achieve Minutes Challenge.

Students at Ynez School were recently treated to a high-energy reading celebration, thanks to their impressive participation in the LA Clippers’ Read to Achieve Minutes Challenge. The initiative, which encourages students across Southern California to log their reading minutes, culminated in a special reward for Ynez: a visit from former Clippers player and author Craig Smith.

The visit took place on March 25 as part of Ynez School’s March Madness festivities. Seven classes participated in the reading program, and since fall, the students have been diligently logging their time and collectively reading hundreds of books. Their efforts caught the attention of the Clippers organization, earning them a coveted reading session with Smith, who is now an author and motivational speaker.

Students gathered in excited anticipation as Smith read from his own children’s book, Craig and His Magical Basketball. Dressed in Clippers t-shirts provided by the team, students cheered as four of their peers joined Smith up front to help read the story aloud. The event was both energetic and heartfelt, as Smith shared stories from his career, talked about the importance of goal-setting, and encouraged students to work hard and believe in themselves.

Following the reading, students had the chance to meet Smith personally, receive autographs on promotional cards and t-shirts, and take home Clippers wristbands and pencils. The event served not only as a celebration of literacy but also as an inspirational reminder that discipline and persistence can open doors both in and out of the classroom.

“Craig was incredibly generous with his time,” reflected Principal Dr. Janice Phan. “He spoke to every student who came up to him, signed shirts and cards, and made each child feel seen and heard. We’re grateful to the Clippers for bringing this experience to our school, and even more proud of our students for reading their way into this opportunity.”

Dr. Phan also praised the dedicated staff who helped bring the program to life. “Our teachers played a crucial role in helping students log their reading minutes, and our librarian and media aide, Ms. Nydia Hinojosa, was instrumental in coordinating with the Clippers organization,” she said. “This was a true team effort that reflects our school’s commitment to literacy and lifelong learning.”As the event wrapped up, there was still excitement in the air, not just because students had met a professional athlete, but because they had earned the experience through their own hard work. Thanks to the Clippers Read to Achieve Minutes Challenge, Ynez students left with more than just gifts and memories. They walked away inspired, empowered, and reminded that reading truly is a slam dunk.
