Marguerita School recently brought together students, families, staff, and community members for a special event aimed at creating a lasting impact on both the campus and the environment. The Community Tree Planting Day, held on Saturday, December 14, 2024, began with an inspirational gathering in the school auditorium. Principal Thomas Kohout welcomed attendees and set the tone for the day, while Catalyst San Gabriel Valley (SGV), a valued community partner, delivered an engaging presentation on the art and science of tree planting. Attendees learned essential tips, safety protocols, and the broader significance of the tree-planting initiative to create a shared sense of purpose. Student representatives from Miranda Woodin’s R.O.C.K. block class also spoke about ways they are using their newfound knowledge and passion for the environment to be part of solutions for their community.
“This event is a testament to the power of the Marguerita community and our shared commitment to making a difference,” said Principal Kohout. “By planting these trees, we are not only enhancing our campus but also teaching our students valuable lessons about stewardship, teamwork, the joy of giving back, and the importance of school pride.”
The planting of 12 Eldarica Pine trees was a hands-on opportunity for students to connect with nature and embrace the school’s R.O.C.K. (Respect, Ownership, Cooperation, and Kindness) values. These qualities, which students are encouraged to demonstrate daily, were brought to life as they worked together to improve their school grounds. After the teams finished planting the pine trees, they continued to enhance their school campus by pulling weeds, watering the native plants, and sowing California Poppy seeds in the mulched areas in front of the school.
The event’s success was made possible through the generosity of many Marguerita families, including the Berrio, Diaz, Rezvani, and Kohout families, as well as the essential support of Catalyst SGV. Their efforts and contributions underscored a shared commitment to enriching the student experience and promoting sustainability.
As shovels hit the soil, the day evolved into more than a community service project; it became a living legacy. Marguerita students now have the unique opportunity to watch these trees grow alongside them. The trees will serve as constant reminders of students’ ability to impact their community in meaningful ways and the importance of environmental stewardship. This initiative showcased Marguerita School’s dedication to fostering a vibrant, caring, collaborative community that truly R.O.C.K.s.
