Tuesday’s winds were weaker than expected, but the National Weather Service is now forecasting extreme fire conditions between 3 am and 3 pm on Wednesday. Peak gusts could reach between 50 mph to 70 mph, particularly in Ventura County and some areas where the Eaton fire is burning.
Starting Thursday, Los Angeles will see a break from the fire weather, though there is a 40% chance that winds will pick up again next week. The exact timing and strength of the winds is yet to be determined.
As of Wednesday morning, the Eaton fire had burned 14,117 acres and containment increased to 45%. The Palisades Fire burned 23,713 acres and was 19% contained. Both fires were still active, and officials continue to provide updates.
Some residents returned to their homes to survey the damage wrought by the fires, but others in more affected areas were unable to do so due to dangerous conditions, including potential flare ups and downed utilities. Evacuation orders remain in place for much of Altadena and West LA.
