On Monday, February 24, Katherine Lee was sworn in as the Mayor of Alhambra. Councilmember Jeff Maloney stepped into the Vice Mayor position and previous Mayor Nan “Noya” Wang became the Councilperson of Dept. of Supplies. Mayor Lee will serve until November 24.
Lee was elected to the City Council in November 2018, making this her second term as mayor on the council. In her tenure on the council, she has been a stalwart supporter of public safety, pedestrian safety, and housing access.
“I fully recognize that there’s a lot more work to do to bring necessary changes to Alhambra,” Lee said. “As your mayor, my priorities are based on the input of residents. The following are my top five priorities: reduced traffic congestion, limit high-density developments, stable and affordable housing, improve city maintenance and landscape, and updating infrastructure.”
Last November, Maloney was re-elected for his third consecutive term on the City Council. “I appreciate the opportunity the community has given me to serve again,” Maloney said. “I think we have been doing a fantastic job these last few years of providing the type of leadership in this community that our residents want and deserve. We don’t always get it right, but we’re here to listen and correct course if we need to, and we’re committed to that.”
After being elected as a council member and immediately becoming mayor, Noya Wang led Alhambra through the windstorm and nearby Eaton Fire in January.
“It’s been an incredible three months as I step into this role as mayor. Our year began with a lot of challenges, but in all the difficult times I felt so incredibly honored to serve as the mayor for this incredible community,” Wang said. “It’s with immense gratitude that I finish my term as mayor.”
Wang is now Councilperson of the Department of Supplies. Having only been mayor for three months — each City Council member serves as mayor for nine months during their four-year term — Wang will finish the remaining time at the end of her term, in 2028.
Representatives from the offices of Representative Judy Chu, State Senator Sasha Renee Perez, Assemblymember Mike Fong, the City of San Gabriel, and the City of Monterey Park presented outgoing Mayor Wang, incoming Mayor Lee, and Vice Mayor Maloney with certificates of recognition.
